Negative rights???
Obama has declared that the Constitution and it’s amendments are “negative Rights” like it is a bad thing. They are “negative rights” in that they tell the government what it CANNOT do and Obama sees this as a problem. I do not I see this as a good thing. Because you see, The founding fathers did not believe the government has ANY rights. They recognized that government derives from the people and is in place to serve those people. All Governments are supposed to be that way and that is precisely what they intended here.
The government does not have the job of instructing me in how to live on a daily basis let alone hourly. But that is exactly what Obama and others like him think it ought to be doing.
They see Government as the only real solution where the founding fathers, you know the guys who started this country, saw that people needed to live their own lives. In fact that is how they wrote it. Just read it and you will see!
“WE the PEOPLE in order to form a more perfect union!…” it is NOT about what the government gets to do to us and that is why they wrote the constitution the way they did. Because they wanted to protect people from the abuses that government run amok tends to generate. The government’s sole purpose in existing is to establish protection and guidance for the people. Not to become a nanny state that tells people when to brush their teeth and when to sleep and how to eat.
I think the evidence is very strong that this was what the founders intended. Think about it.
The constitution outlining the things that government is forbidden from doing.
The three branches of government which place controls on one another in order to keep each of them from simply taking over.
And the admonishment to us that we must keep control of the government or else t will inevitably try to control us.
When I joined the Army I swore an oath and that oath declared that I was to protect ___________________
So what is it I am to protect? The president? No. Congress? No. The Supreme Court? No. the answer is the Constitution of the United States of America.
And from what (or whom) am I supposed to protect it?
… from all enemies foreign AND domestic. (emphasis mine)
Why the constitution? Because it is what tells us what rights we have as people of this nation. And why from all enemies foreign and DOMESTIC? Because there are people who will consistently rise up wanting to take control over me and all other peoples. They cannot stand to see anyone who has freedom or a will to do something that these dictatorial jerks don’t like.
The enemy MIGHT be someone, a person like Hitler who would wish to rule over every aspect.
It might be something, An organization or group that thinks it knows better what is wanted or needed.
Or it might be a religion or cult that wants to impose it’s values on everyone instead of letting them have their own values.
The constitution tells us that we are free to carry guns so that we might “protect our homes”.
The constitution tells us that we are free to say what we want that the truth can be known and no one is denied their chance at being heard.
The constitution tells us that we are free to have a press corps, free from government influence that will report fairly on all issues that we might be informed and make good choices.
The constitution tells us that we are free to worship (Or even NOT worship) as we see fit that we can be at peace with our faith.
The constitution tells us that we are free to come and go as we like that we can seek our happiness.
Benjamin Franklin once said that anyone who is willing to give up his freedom in order to have security will have, and deserves, Neither. I am thinking that is where we are approaching today. The point where we will have no freedom because we want the government to tell us that we ought to live the way THEY decide so that we can be secure. At that point we will be neither secure nor free. We will be pawns only doing those things that the government wants of us. And if that includes our demise… well so be it. We will not be free, we will not be secure.
We will have sold out to "someone" who is, by nature corrupt and venal and we will suffer for it.
That is something I want to keep from happening to my children. THAT is why I am speaking out here THAT is why I am so concerned.
